Why emergency power in an apartment works differently
In a detached house, a petrol generator is sometimes an option. In an apartment, it is almost always unsuitable. Exhaust fumes, carbon monoxide, noise, fire hazard, and HOA rules make a fuel generator on a balcony, gallery, in a storage room, or indoors unsafe. Even a slightly open window does not make this responsible.
For apartments, emergency power therefore usually revolves around a portable power station with a lithium battery, supplemented with flashlights, headlamps, batteries, and possibly a foldable solar panel. This system works silently, without exhaust fumes, and can be used indoors. However, it has limits: a battery provides a limited amount of energy. Those who waste that energy on heavy appliances will run out of power faster than necessary.
Also consider building-related facilities. Emergency power in your own home does not automatically make the elevator, central entrance door, intercom, central heating, water pump, or parking garage work. Especially in tall buildings, this can affect accessibility and water pressure. So prepare for a bug-in scenario where you have to function independently in your apartment for several days.
Start with critical consumers
First, distinguish between necessary, useful, and not feasible. A phone, radio, LED lighting, and medical equipment can be critical. A television, kettle, microwave, electric heater, and induction hob are usually not. The latter group draws a lot of power and significantly shortens the operating time of a compact battery.
A practical emergency power plan for an apartment often focuses on four functions: lighting, communication, information, and maintaining essential supplies. For lighting, think of headlamps and LED lanterns, not fully illuminating every room. For communication, a charged phone, power banks, charging cables, and a radio with batteries or a built-in battery are logical. For information, an emergency radio is valuable when mobile internet or local networks fail.
Cooling requires careful consideration. A refrigerator does not continuously consume the same amount of power, but the compressor has a peak when it starts up. Therefore, look not only at the wattage on the label, but also at the peak power a power station can handle. Keep the refrigerator closed and only use emergency power when necessary. The calculation is simple: power in watts multiplied by usage time in hours is the required number of Wh. Then factor in losses during conversion and charging. A usable safety margin of 15 to 25 percent prevents disappointment.
Suppose that in 24 hours you charge two phones, use a radio, use LED lighting for four hours, and need to run a CPAP for one night. Together, depending on the devices, this can amount to several hundred Wh. For this type of basic use, a compact to medium-sized power station is often sufficient. If you also want to periodically power a refrigerator or remain independent for several days, the required capacity quickly increases.
A 500 Wh power station does not always deliver exactly 500 Wh to a wall socket in practice. The conversion from battery voltage to 230 volts costs energy. Devices with an adapter have an extra conversion step. Where possible, charge via USB-C or 12 volts instead of via a 230V adapter. Add separate power banks to that. This allows you to keep phones available without constantly drawing on the main station.
For light, multiple independent sources are better than one large lamp. Headlamps keep your hands free for cooking, first aid, or descending a dark stairwell. An LED lantern illuminates a room economically. In addition, store flashlights with spare batteries in fixed places: near the meter cupboard, in the bedroom, and near the front door.
A battery-powered radio or an emergency radio belongs to the same set. During a long-term outage, local information can be more important than entertainment. Keep a paper overview of important phone numbers, addresses, and contacts. When your phone is dead, a digital contact list does not work.
Solar panels can extend the operating time, but are not a guarantee. A panel behind glass provides limited power, and a balcony does not always have favorable sun or space. Make checking a fixed routine, for example, when you check smoke detectors and emergency supplies.
Do not use a damaged battery, swollen power bank, or cable with loose insulation. Also, do not connect a power strip full of devices to a small power station just because it has multiple outlets. The total power remains limited. Keep the ventilation openings of the station clear, especially when using a device via 230 volts.
Think beyond electricity
Emergency power is part of your apartment supply, not a complete solution. Without power, water pressure, payment options, heating, communication, and access to the building may be limited. Therefore, also provide drinking water, food that requires little preparation, a manual can opener, first aid, hygiene products, warm clothing, and cash in small denominations.
Discuss with housemates who is responsible for what. For example, one person manages the battery and cables, another checks water and lighting. If you live alone or on a high floor, establish in advance who you can call or visit if the elevator breaks down.
