A power outage, pipe burst, or drinking water contamination rarely happens at a convenient time. That's precisely when you don't want to be figuring out how many liters of water should be in an emergency kit. Water is the first supply you need to get in order: without safe drinking water, cooking, taking medication, and thinking clearly quickly become more difficult.

The practical basic is simple: count on 3 liters of water per person per day, for at least 72 hours. That's 9 liters per person. This is not a luxury supply and not a complete solution for washing, cleaning, or long-term self-sufficiency. It is the operational minimum to get you through the first three days.

How many liters of water in an emergency kit?

For a standard home emergency kit, this calculation applies:

  • 1 person: 9 liters for 72 hours
  • 2 people: 18 liters for 72 hours
  • 3 people: 27 liters for 72 hours
  • 4 people: 36 liters for 72 hours
  • 5 people: 45 liters for 72 hours
Those 3 liters roughly consist of drinking water and water for simple food preparation. In warm weather, during physical exertion, with fever, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, the need may be higher. Young children also need their own supply, although their daily consumption varies by age. Do not calculate with an average household consumption, but with each actual family member who depends on the supply at home.

Pets also count. A dog that normally drinks a substantial amount of water cannot rely on the household's supply. Account for its needs separately in your calculation. This prevents you from having to choose between your own drinking water and that of your animal in an emergency.

72 hours is a starting point, not an end goal

A three-day supply is a logical minimum because emergency services and utilities need to prioritize in the initial phase of a disruption. But the cause of a water problem determines how much supply is actually needed. In a local outage, the tap may work again the same day. In the event of a flood, prolonged power outage, contamination of the water supply, or logistical disruption, recovery can take longer.

Those with space and budget should therefore extend their supply to seven days. For a family of four, this means 84 liters of drinking water. That sounds like a lot, but water also weighs a lot: 84 liters is 84 kilograms, excluding packaging. Dividing your supply across multiple bottles, jerry cans, and locations is more practical than storing everything in one large container.

A home supply is also different from a bug-out supply. Carrying nine liters per person in a backpack is not realistic for most people. For evacuation, you should therefore choose a combination of direct drinking water, a sturdy water bottle or water bladder, and a method for filtering or treating water. At home, you store volume. On the go, you limit weight and increase your ability to find and purify water.

Separate drinking water, cooking water, and hygiene

The guideline of 3 liters per person per day is intended for drinking and limited food use. This does not include extensive water consumption for showering, flushing toilets, washing dishes, or cleaning. Anyone who only stores 9 liters per person and then uses a large part for hygiene has mismanaged their emergency supply.

Therefore, distinguish between drinking water and utility water. Drinking water must be safe, sealed, and immediately usable. Utility water, depending on the situation, can consist of collected rainwater or water not suitable for consumption. Use this, for example, for flushing toilets or cleaning, but never mix this supply with your drinking water storage.

If you have a water filter, treat it as a supplement and not a replacement for stored water. A filter has limitations: not every model removes viruses, chemicals, or dissolved contaminants. Additionally, you still need a water source. In the event of a warning from the water company about chemical contamination, filtering is not automatically the correct solution. Always follow the current instructions from the authorities.

Which packaging works best?

Good water storage is not just a matter of liters. You must be able to lift, open, pour, and rotate the supply. Small bottles are immediately usable and easy to distribute. Jerry cans offer more volume per package but are heavier and require attention to cleaning. Large water barrels are efficient for a fixed home supply but less suitable if you need to move quickly.

For most households, a combination works best. Keep some in sealed bottles for immediate use and some in sturdy jerry cans as a reserve. This way, you don't have to constantly open a large container, and you reduce the chance of contaminating your supply.

For all packaging, pay attention to three points: use material suitable for drinking water, seal everything well, and store the supply in a cool, dark place. Avoid places with large temperature fluctuations, direct sunlight, or strong odors from paint, fuel, and cleaning products. A supply in a warm shed or car ages faster than a supply in a cool pantry.
